Four Legged Furry Friends

photography & words by Ryan Itchon (with help from his furry friend, Rooney)

“Happiness is a warm puppy.”

         ― Charles M. Schulz

We explore the saying, 'dogs are a man's best friend'  with Ryan as he documents his adventures with newfound companion, comrade and chum -  furry friend, Rooney.

There is something unique about having a dog as your best friend. The moment you let them into your life an instant bond takes presence that goes on to build a companionship like no other. During the development of that relationship, dogs do not ask for much. They simply require your care and time. In return, not only will they give you the same kindness, they will give you beyond what you perceived about having a pet in the first place. They will give you so many unforgettable moments of playfulness, loyalty, happiness and love that will be treasured forever by you and your furry friend.

I welcomed Rooney when he was about 3 months old and since then having him in my life has been one of the best decisions I have made. Before Rooney, I was living in my apartment by myself going through my regular routine of work, social hangs and sleep. Life was quite repetitive and empty at times. Having him I have been so enthralled by the happiness and excitement he brings to the journey that we are on. He is the centre of it all. Every little thing we do like driving to the park or sitting by the window together to watch the snowfall outside builds into that foundation of companionship.

I am overjoyed to have Rooney in my life because I love how incredibly close we have become. He can sense love and affection by the way I treat him and he displays great fondness by waking me up in the morning before I get ready for work. When I return home Rooney starts greeting me at the door with excitement by hopping around and as I greet him back his tail wags quickly. After a long day at work, I look forward to spending quality time with him, even if it is just a short stroll around the block, playing fetch at the park, practicing commands or simply sitting cozily at home. When I have my days off I seize every moment that we have together by doing anything that draws us closer. I realized that through these treasured moments Rooney is not just a pet. He is my furry friend and I am forever grateful to have by my side.
