Affogato Affinity

FOOD ESSAY/

'I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.'

-T. S. Eliot

If you are a caffeine addict, you will understand how coffee is a daily necessity, a passion, even a ritual. The distinctive aroma wakes us from our slumber, drawing us out of bed. It fuels us forward into the morning and propels us into the day. Without it, some of us are inaudible let alone functional. On those hot summer days, what better way to cool yourself off than with an affogato, which translates to the word “drowned” in Italian. Is it a beverage? Is it a dessert? Whichever way you view an affogato, it is a cooling treat that will satisfy your craving for caffeine and something sweet.

A single or double shot of hot espresso is poured over generous scoops of vanilla ice-cream. The hot, velvety liquid melts the ice-cream into a creamy, swirling texture of caffeinated decadence. Heavenly mouthfuls of sweet and bitter, warm and cold. The aroma stimulates your senses and perks you up.

Make it an afternoon ritual, an indulgence on your own or to share. You can make this according to your tastes with more ice-cream or perhaps more coffee if that is to your liking. The perfect pick me up that can be created in very little time.

Ingredients

1-2 scoops of vanilla ice-cream

1-2 shots of quality espresso

Preparation

Put 1-2 scoops of the vanilla ice-cream into a tumbler of choice, preferably pre-chilled.

Pour the espresso on top.

Consume immediately.

You can add a shot of liqueur like amaretto for extra indulgence.
